Alex Smithies may be the favourite to win QPR's player of the year award this season but he still feels he can be even better.

The Rs stopper has been impressive between the sticks at Loftus Road this season and has won Rangers a large number of points with his performances.

That being said, the former Huddersfield man believes he can get even better and has been unhappy with the amount of goals he has conceded.

Smithies said: “I wouldn't say I've been in the form of my life as I've been conceding too many goals and we've not picked up as many good results as we wanted.

Pen pals: Team-mates congratulate Alex Smithies at Fulham

“I'm always looking for improvements. The form of my life would be clean sheets every week.”

Smithies' form has seen him nominated for the Football League player of the year and London goalkeeper of the year at the London Football Awards.

Being the team-centric person that the goalkeeper is, Smithies is more concerned about winning matches than expanding his personal trophy cabinet.

He added: “It's a little bonus but it's not the be all and end all to me. That's not the reason you play – you go for the feeling of winning games.”
