The defence at Loftus Road is seen by most as an area in desperate need of improvements over the summer period.

We'll discuss central defence and the left-back slot over the next few days, but for now, we take a look at the contenders for the right-back slot.

James Perch

The versatile defender has flattered to deceive at right-back. Perch made 32 appearances for the club this season, picking up 13 yellow cards and one red during those games.

A player who is prone to a reckless challenge, and likely to be one of the higher earners within the squad, Perch is a player who could be moved on should a better option become available when the transfer window opens.

Also, with the encouraging Darnell Furlong being eased into the first team fold, it would be plausible to see the youngster overtaking Perch in the current QPR pecking order, making Perch even more dispensable as the club look for stability in the line-up, and value in the wage budget.

With one year left on his contract, the club may look to move the player on in order to command some sort of fee.

Darnell Furlong

A defender with an extremely bright future ahead of him.

The 21-year-old spent the first half of last season on loan at Swindon Town in League One, making 28 appearances before coming to challenge for a spot at Loftus Road.

Widely tipped to become a first team regular next season, the Loftus Road faithful would love to see the defender given a chance to make his mark on a regular basis.

Furlong is by no means the finished article, but he certainly has the potential to be a quality right back at this level.

Transfer movement?

An area which could certainly use strengthening.

Last season Perch was disappointing and for a senior squad member, you'd expect more. I wouldn't be surprised to see Perch offloaded and replaced if a suitable option becomes available.

As for Furlong, he has the potential to be a real success and is seen as the early favourite for the right-back slot next season, however he would benefit from the competition and tutelage of a more senior, out and out right-back.
