SHAUN Derry says securing Premier League survival is as good as winning the Championship title.

The QPR midfielder played a big part in both campaigns as Rangers beat the drop by the skin of their teeth following a dramatic finale at Manchester City last week.

And Derry reckons this season, which has seen a new owner and a change of managers at Loftus Road , will be a monumental year for the club.

He said: “Staying up is as important as winning promotion. The celebrations are different because it's hard to celebrate when you've survived by one or two points.

“But in time this will turn into a monumental season for the club because I'm sure with the owners and the backers the club can progress.

“People will look back on their first season back in the Premier League and I'm proud to say I was part of it.
He added: “We've shown in the last four or five weeks we can mix it with the top teams. We mixed it with their champions on their own patch.

“Clearly there's going to be new players coming in throughout the close season and there's going to be players that leave. That happens in football.”
