Ian Holloway says that his new signings should take inspiration from the likes of Jamie Vardy, as he explains transfer strategy at QPR.

The Hoops have opted for free transfers, loans and signings from lower leagues rather than investing large sums of money in high-risk moves, something that Holloway says should be done by more clubs.

He said: "The whole point is not how much you spend, but what you manage to bring, with the character they’ve got, and there are some gems out there. I want them to come in and settle and for our fans not to judge them for where they’ve come from, but for where they want to go.

"Jamie Vardy absolutely proves that doesn’t he? If you look at him in recent years who would have thought that he’d go on to do what he did, play for England having started where he did, like Ian Wright, I see him on the telly all the time.

"It’s almost as if football is set up with all these superstars now, and they’re all given massive contracts to come and be a player, and half of them have never played. The game’s gone mad.

"For me there are wonderful players out there who if you give them a chance to come to a place like this, they’ll grasp it. I want the fans to understand that and not judge them for where they’ve come from and just be open-minded and help them when they need help.

"I remember people moaning about me, but I was a balance for Ray Wilkins. Two Ray Wilkins’s ain’t no good. An Ian Holloway and Ray Wilkins might have been efficient, you need a balance.

"I’m pleased with the little bits of trickery that i’m seeing in amongst the hard work, and then hopefully people will see what we’re looking for."
