QPR legend Ian Gillard has hailed the idea of taking the players to Portugal as part of their pre-season preparations.

The former Tottenham and Aldershot man says the trip away will have a positive impact on the squad, and will hopefully aid them in their attempt to make a positive start once the Championship season begins in August.

Speaking to Get West London, he said: "It'll be hard work.

"It'll be a difficult week with the conditions but they're very lucky that they can experience the different scenery, and then they can come back and start playing games.

"But hopefully it will benefit the players.

"It's very important to get points on the board early. If you can get a few wins under your belt straight away, that's a big bonus.

"But looking at the Championship, it's a very hard league so hopefully we can make a good start."
