Jake Bidwell has been pleased with his performances so far this season but knows he can always improve, especially with Ian Holloway using him in different positions.

The full back has been an ever present in the Rangers side this season and has played in a handful of roles during the campaign so far.

And he feels that he is a better player this season, compared to his first campaign last year after his move from west London rivals Brentford.

He said: “I've played every game so far which is an indication the manager is pleased with what I'm doing. I think I've settled down compared to last year.

“We've been playing 3-5-2 at times and I've got to grips with that role better than I did last year. I came back into the side after I was injured.

“I was trying to learn on the job. I've played left back, left centre back and left of the five and I feel I understand my role now and more comfortable being asked to do those roles.

“I'm always looking to improve personally and as a team and I'll continue to do that as well.

He added: “I feel a better player than last year and I'm always striving to improve. I feel I've added that to my game.

“At Brentford I played 220 games and 215 have been at left back and I've been asked to do different jobs and added that to my game and learning a couple of different positions.

“The tactical side of it is massive. You see the top teams in the Premier League like Tottenham and Manchester City they can change formation as and when they like.

“If you can play more than one position it's important and will help you. I feel I've learned those positions and do a job in the three positions I've been asked to play so far.”

With Bidwell playing in different roles it requires a different mindset and skillset with the main difference being how far you push down the pitch.

He explained: “I think when you're playing at the left of the five, rather than a left back where your job is to stop the winger, you have to release yourself to deal with the full back more than concentrating on the winger.

“There is little different elements to it that you don't have to think about as much as a full back.

“There's more emphasis to help at the other end of it and you can find yourself in the attacking half and get to the back post at times and add a bit more quality and help in attack than as a regular full back.”

Bidwell is a student of the game and watches players who play in a similar role to him and pinpointed Chelsea full back Cesar Azpilicueta as a player he admired.

He said: “The one for me at the minute is Azpilicueta. He's played different positions in similar positions to ones I've been asked to.

“He's played on the right of the three and I think his versatility is brilliant. It doesn't affect him which one he's asked to play.

“I think he's the best in the Premier League at doing that. I've found myself watching a lot of him the last few months.”
