Ian Holloway has denied he tipped Brentford to be relegated ahead of the season in the wake of his QPR side's 3-1 loss at Griffin Park.

The Rs boss had the Bees in 22nd, the final relegation spot, in his pre-season predictions for Sky Sports and was highly critical of the way the club was run at the time.

He said ahead of the season: “Brentford are regressing. Mark Warburton got them punching above their weight.

“They still haven't replaced Andre Gray and Alan Judge will be missing for the start of the season. They could be in trouble.”

Brentford, however, are in ninth place after their 3-1 win over the Hoops with a Jota brace, sandwiched by Joel Lynch's consolation, and a Yoann Barbet goal giving them the win.

Holloway was reminded of his pre-season comments and he hit back, insisting he had been misquoted: "I didn't tip them to go down. Let's get this straight.

“I said if you keep selling your best players you will struggle if a manager keeps having the rug pulled from under his feet.

“Brentford have a brilliant way of playing and a great scouting network to do it so well done to them.

“The teams I didn't tip to do very well – Fulham – totally wrong. No matter they lost their best two players have gone on to do brilliantly with a good manager. So have Brentford.”

He added: “Deep down, at Sky, because I was inexperienced at that I picked a whole season. I said Newcastle and Brighton would go up.

“One of them has. I said Leeds might be in the play-offs. I wasn't sure about Reading. I said Sheffield Wednesday would be there.

“You can say what you like. I've had a good life. I've been QPR manager twice. That's all I'm saying.”
