QPR boss Harry Redknapp admits it was a difficult decision to drop Andros Townsend for this afternoon's win at Southampton.

The on-loan Spurs youngster has been in sparkling form since his switch to Loftus Road in January, but Junior Hoilett was preferred on the flank.

Jamie Mackie and Adel Taarabt were also left out as Rangers kept their survival hopes alive with a 2-1 win at St Mary's.

Redknapp said: “Townsend has been excellent. He’s done great for me, so it was a difficult one leaving him out.

"He’s been as good a player as we have, but I decided to give Junior Hoilett a run today.

“I felt we needed a target, so I brought [Jay] Bothroyd in as Bobby [Zamora] wasn’t fit.

“Adel hasn’t been at his best so I left him out.”
