Chris Ramsey insists he was right to spare QPR youngsters a mental scarring at Manchester City.

Even as his side wilted to a demoralising 6-0 defeat, there was no point in bringing on the likes of Darnell Furlong and Reece Grego-Cox, reckons the coach.

Not this time: Darnell Furlong

Instead, there was a cameo from Shaun Wright-Phillips that angered Hoops fans as he ‘milked’ the crowd where he spent three years, according to web comments.

Both teenagers have already made their first-team debut, but it went horribly wrong for Furlong at Crystal Palace in March where he was on the end of a torrid time from Yannick Bolasie.

Once bitten is twice shy, claims Ramsey.

“You have to be really careful about that because if you play people and they perform horrendously sometimes it can have an adverse affect,” he said.

“You have to make sure you keep them wanting to play in the first team and not looking at it as such a daunting task they never want to do it again.

"You want to make sure they feel able and capable of performing at that level so you have to protect them a little bit."
