QPR and Birmingham City could serve lifetime bans on the perpetrators of the coin throwing incident and a separate scuffle that saw an Rs fan take on a Blues supporter during Saturday's match.

Hoops won the game 2-0, and after the second goal, a penalty from Junior Hoilett, a coin was directed at celebrating Rangers players behind the away School End at Loftus Road.

They are the third such shameful scenes in a week following WBA's Chris Brunt getting hit in the face by a 50p piece during his club's FA Cup game at Reading last week, and Stoke keeper Jack Butland allegedly having a missile thrown at him on Saturday.

Metropolitan and West Midland police continue to investigate, but both Blues and Hoops will also take action of their own.

A QPR spokesperson said: "The club can confirm it is cooperating and assisting the police in their investigation in relation to the incident that took place when a QPR fan confronted a Birmingham City supporter in the first half of Saturday's fixture at Loftus Road.

"In addition, both the club and the police are currently reviewing CCTV footage regarding the coin throwing incident which came from the away end following QPR's second goal.

“The club deplores the behaviour of those involved in the incidents and will continue to cooperate with the police to ensure the correct sanctions are made.

“Once both investigations have been concluded, the club - in communication with Birmingham City - will deal with the matter internally.”

Here is a gallery of well-behaved Hoops fans and match action to show it was far from doom and gloom before and during the game.
