THE clash between the two highest profile black managers in league football produced an exciting honours even result.

Two goals in as many second half minutes appeared to have put Chris Hughton's unbeaten league leaders Brighton out of sight until Charlie Austin, on his first start for over a month, struck twice in the final quarter, the second against 10 men after Seagulls' defender Lewis Dunk was sent off.

What did we learn from a second draw in 72 hours for QPR new manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink?

On target: Charlie Austin

Rangers refused to be overawed

For much of the game it was Hasselbaink's Rangers carrying the threat against former defender Hughton's disciplined and organised leaders.

However, Rangers refusal to cave in following Brighton's early second half one-two broke that discipline and organisation - a triumph for their endeavour.

Deal or no deal? Matt Phillips (L)

Who is Rangers' biggest fish in the transfer window - Austin or Phillips?

Talisman Austin showed his value with his two goals and he will have his admirers when the transfer merry-go-round kicks in at the beginning of January.

But perhaps even more importantly his return to striking duties allowed winger Matt Phillips to go back to what he does best, providing assists for the England striker rather than having to impersonate him. No wonder West Brom are interested.

Rangers already look fitter

Hasselbaink's men weren't up to playing his pressing game for more than 55 minutes against Burnley on Saturday, but sustained the tempo much better against the Championship pace-setters and ultimately their pressure paid dividends.

Return: Bobby Zamora

Glass half full for now

Normally, a return of two points from two home games would be viewed as an average start at best.

However, these were points against contenders Burnley and then the league leaders, the latter getting bums off seats among the Rangers' faithful, so the honeymoon period goes on.

You can't beat a bit of banter

Former Rangers hero Bobby Zamora - a substitute for Brighton tonight - was serenaded by both sets of fans. Some of the chants weren't entirely suitable for TV viewing, but most were funny and at least the microphones were turned off.
