Jake Goodman will make a timely return to the AFC Wimbledon squad for tomorrow’s visit of Portsmouth following Dave Winfield’s early recall by York City.

Wimbledon announced on Monday that they had reached an agreement with the Minstermen to hold onto powerful centre-half Winfield for a further month.

However, York have been hit by an injury to Stephane Zubar earlier this week and Winfield is needed as cover by manager Russell Wilcox.

Goodman, on loan from Millwall, has been missing for the past couple of months with a broken toe but came through another 90 minutes for the U21s on Tuesday.

Midfielder Tom Beere was also involved in the 3-1 victory over AFC Bournemouth and the pair are now in contention to make their comebacks this weekend.

Fielding the questions: Neal Ardley

“Jake came through 90 minutes and was a lot less rusty than in his first run-out,” explained Wimbledon manager Neal Ardley to Dons Player.

“He is in my thoughts now after losing Dave Winfield for Saturday.

“Tom had a slight hamstring injury, but he scored a couple of goals on Tuesday and he is back in contention.”

While the young duo are coming off the treatment table, they have been replaced on it by Callum Kennedy.

The full-back was forced off in the first half at Mansfield in midweek and early indications are that the defender will be out for a number of games.

“Callum tried to cross the ball when he was off balance and he felt his thigh muscle pop,” Ardley added.

“Our initial thoughts are that he has pulled his thigh, which means he is likely to be out for quite a few weeks I would have thought.

Cardiff City's Federico Macheda and Colchester's Cole Kpekawa compete for the ball
New signing: Cole Kpekawa (R) will be in the Pompey squad

“Until we get the results of a scan we don’t know how long he will be out for.”

Portsmouth have bolstered their defence this week with the loan signings of Nyron Nosworthy from Blackpool and Queens Park Rangers' Cole Kpekawa.

Andy Awford will also be able to select Matt Tubbs, who enjoyed a successful first half of the season at Kingsmeadow with the Dons.

“I know people are never happy when a player leaves you, but Matt was never a problem for us,” added Ardley.

“I hope he gets a good reception. Matt was professional and he worked his socks off for us. He scored 15 goals for us before Christmas.

“If we had him still here would we be closer to the play-offs? Of course we would be. He is a good player, a great lad, and he worked hard for us as a club.”
