WESTMINSTER football coach Derek Peel is dusting off his coaching manuals after answering an SOS from youngsters on his estate.

After 10 years of running five-a-side teams at Lillie Road in Fulham, Peel thought his days of team-talks and player tantrums were over.

That was before some lads from the area around Fernhead Road, near Paddington, talked him into starting up Fernhead Rovers FC.

That was just 12 weeks ago and now the veteran coach is head honcho of one senior team, three junior sides (U16s, U14s and U12s), one boys five-a-side team, set to play at Lillie Road, and a Fernhead girls team.

Peel reckoned the need to provide an alternative to anti-social behaviour was what had persuaded him to pull his boots back on.

"We are doing it so that the boys get enjoyment and stay out of trouble," he said.

"If they are winning trophies playing football they are less likely to be getting into punch ups."

Ian Reeves, Rovers' new club captain, was one of those who persuaded Peel out of footballing retirement.

A member of London Tigers' reserve side, Reeves has taken his level one FA coaching badge and also coaches the Spar tan S o u t h Midlands League side's U9s.

However, the teenager says there was a need for Fernhead Rovers in Paddington.

"London Tigers are essentially an Asian-based team, but there wasn't anything set up for people of other ethnic backgrounds in our area.

"Fernhead is a mix of all the different cultures around the estate."

The fledgling club has started well, their U16s winning the final of a recent tournament in Greenford organised by Brentford FC.

They are on the lookout for players aged 8-20 as well as local businesses to provide sponsorship.
