New Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will encourage debate in the Stamford Bridge dressing room when he officially takes charge of the club this summer.

Conte has signed a three-year deal to become the next Blues manager when his contract with the Italian national team expires after UEFA Euro 2016 in France.

The 46-year-old is nicknamed ‘Martello’ - the Hammer - for the way he rules with an iron fist and is not afraid to speak his mind with his players.

It is a management style similar to the one former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho often described as confrontational leadership.

Mourinho appeared to take his method too far with his squad on several occasions and a disenchanted Blues squad was one of the main reasons for his sacking in December.

Conte though is willing to open a dialogue with his players rather than running Chelsea as a dictatorship and believes all coaches need to listen to their teams.

While studying for a diploma in education, obtained in 2008 while he was coach of Bari, Conte wrote a thesis on sports psychology called La personalita dell’allenatore.

The title translates to The personality of the coach and he used the paper to delve into his thoughts about what makes an ideal boss, according to The Mirror.

He said: “I have been lucky and tenacious, I didn’t lose my desire to get the diploma. I’d like to teach sport to children, to have pupils.

“My brother Gianluca is also a teacher of physical education. Our parents are very pleased with us.

It was interesting work, I tried to explain how the ideal coach should be.

“He should be a great psychologist, one who can listen and who explains to you the reasons for a choice.

“The role of the coach is similar to that of a father because managing a team of boys requires a personality which adapts itself to their demands.

"There’s too little dialogue, always in one direction. I like coaches not to speak only about football.

“The average player is a valid person even if he hasn’t studied.

“They talk only about matches. I like to go on TV and talk about other things, without feeling like a millionaire in underpants.”

Conte’s first game in the Chelsea dugout is set to be a friendly fixture with Liverpool in America in late July following the conclusion of the Euros.

Conte will become the 10th boss to take charge of Chelsea since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich completed his takeover of the club in 2003.

He added: "I am very excited about the prospect of working at Chelsea Football Club.

“I am proud to be the coach of the national team of my country and only a role as attractive as manager of Chelsea could follow that," he told Chelsea's official website.

"I am looking forward to meeting everyone at the club and the day-to-day challenge of competing in the Premier League."
