JOSE MOURINHO says Chelsea can win the league in his first season back in charge – but the relatively inexperienced nature of the squad makes it less certain for him than his first season.

Back in 2005, the Blues boss had a core of finished products in his line up, whereas he now has many younger players who have yet to fully develop.

“My squad was the squad of end products,” he said. “We had Petr Cech arriving and he was what he is. Robben – young boy arriving but already European Championship in his legs. Carvalho – the kind of player we were buying to be with John [Terry] and Lampard, Drogba, Makalele.

“I felt that with some tactical work and group work and mentality for a team that didn’t have a winning culture, the team was in conditions to go and win immediately.

“It’s a different process now. We have some talents that are not the end products. Some of the kids never played a Premier League match not because they weren’t in England.

“We have lots of these people. We have a young team. I want to think that this team will be better and make less mistakes and be more solid.

“I think we’ll be better step by step and they don’t need the added pressure. I put pressure on them every day. I don’t need outside pressure. But yes, I think we can win it.”

Mourinho says his side will be adventurous in their pursuit of points and will not be basing their approach merely on good defending. He says that was also the case in his first spell in charge, when Chelsea's success was perceived as mainly based on an impregnable defence.

“Sometimes they gamble more than everybody else,” Mourinho said. “ If we’re not winning, we give it a go. I think that’s part of the game.

“You can speak about styles – you can prefer one to the other. But nobody can stay my teams are not offensive teams.

“Oscar, Hazard, Mata, De Bruyne, Schurlle. We can’t play physical football with these people. You’ve got to use the best quality the team has. My players are technical players. We need the ball, we want the ball. We try to attack and be dominant.”
