Jose Mourinho has confirmed Michael Essien can move to another club if the Ghanaian gets an approach that offers him regular first team football.

As with Juan Mata, the 31-year-old is particularly anxious to play every week in the build up to the World Cup and may need to quit the Bridge to achieve his aim.

The midfielder was a big part of the first team Mourinho built at Stamford Bridge and he followed the Portuguese to Real Madrid for a loan spell, but injuries and age have reduced the effectiveness of the man dubbed 'The bison.'

“He's in a position where he can go or stay,” said the Chelsea boss.

“If he stays, we are more than happy. He's a fantastic club man and a fantastic team player. He's another player, like Mata, who gave everything to this club.

“But if a great situation arrives for his future - for a few more years of contract and career at a high level – he's another one we feel we must show respect to and not stop him going.”

Mourinho added that Essien was likely to play against Stoke City in Sunday's FA Cup tie at Stamford Bridge.
