MANCHESTER United should not have a problem selling Wayne Rooney to a Premier League rival because Italian sides have been doing it for years, according to Jose Mourinho.

With Chelsea set to table a third bid for the England striker after Monday night's meeting between the sides, it still looks as if United are reluctant to play ball with a domestic rival.

But the Blues' boss says such a stance is not one he advocates, he claims.

“You see in Italy what happens every season without any kind of problem.” Mourinho said.

“A player goes from Milan to Inter, from Inter to Milan, from Roma to Juventus, from Juventus to Inter – and this happens all the time. You saw Inzaghi play for Juventus, for Milan and for Inter. From the big ones, I think only Totti stayed all his life at one club.

“It doesn't happen much here, but I don't know why. But I've done it. We had William Gallas unhappy and we sold him to Arsenal.

"Sometimes you push players abroad when you should keep him in your league, because when you keep players in your league, you are contributing to making your league the best league.

"When you want to sell and you push the players abroad, I think you are giving the wrong contribution.”
