Jose Mourinho has lost patience with hos side's inability to translate dominance into goals and plans to instill a greater defensive work ethic.

The Chelsea boss complained that defeats at Stoke and Sunderland had followed a pattern he will not tolerate any more of the Blues throwing games away they should have won.

That means we can expect to see a greater emphasis on good defending – one of the bywords of his previous Chelsea teams. Indeed, all of Friday's training session was devoted to defending.

“We don't need to change formation to think about the game in a different way and to try to improve in certain aspects of our game,” Mourinho said.

“We know that we don't have the players with the quality to be the killer that scores week after week, game after game and to express in [goals] the quality of the football we are playing.

“But we can improve our results having more security when we lose possession of the ball.

“At this moment we are not punishing opponents by scoring goals and killing them when we have everything in our hands to that.

“ At the same time, at the moment we are being punished when we lose the ball. Every team against us has their best efficiency percentage against us. They have two chances, they score two goals.

“If we cannot improve our efficiency in front of the goal, we have to improve at the other end.”

Mourinho continued: “One of the aspects we have to improve is the defensive work by the attacking players when the team lose the ball.

“In every match, we are dominant and in the matches we lost, we had even more possession than in the matches we won.

“To be a team that plays good football is a very important step. To be one that plays very good football and wins lots of matches is a more difficult step and only possible when that team defends very well.

“Some of those players used to having the ball at their feet and very comfortable with the offensive phase, when the team loses the ball, they also have to be very comfortable, working a lot for the team.”
