Marco van Ginkel is set to be eased back to fitness with a run out for Chelsea’s U21s at the end of March.

The £8million summer signing from Vitesse Arnhem has endured a frustrating start to his Blues career after being stretchered off in only his fourth appearance at Swindon in September.

It was thought that van Ginkel would be ruled out for the rest of the campaign, however he is ahead of schedule and is already back in light training at Cobham.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is keeping a close eye on the midfielder’s progress and has already put a plan in place to get the youngster back in action.

“Marco van Ginkel is doing very well,” confirmed the Blues manager. “He may play with the reserves at the end of March or the beginning of April.”

It won’t be easy for van Ginkel to force his way back into Mourinho’s first-team plans though, particularly given the recent purchase of Nemanja Matic from Benfica to bolster the midfield ranks.
