Middlesbrough 3-0 Brentford (Middlesbrough win 5-1 on aggregate)

Brentford made it eight appearances in the play-offs without winning promotion as Middlesbrough ended their Premier League dream.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, the Bees needed the performance of their lives against a Boro side who were content to demonstrate the ugly side of the game in their pursuit of Wembley glory.

Lee Tomlin scored from the home side's first shot after 22 minutes as his effort found the back of the net via the inside of the post.

Kike booked Boro's place at Wembley 10 minutes into the second half after a fine breakaway that the Bees could not deal with.

The opening exchanges were nervy as Boro looked to press the visitors high up the pitch.

Jota had the first of the game but it was a tame effort that Dimi Konstantopoulos easily gathered.

Battle: Middlesbrough's Grant Leadbitter in action with Brentford's Alex Pritchard

It was the wake-up call Middlesbrough needed as they took the lead six minutes later with Tomlin having a go from the edge of the area that guided into the net via the post.

Dean Whitehead was fortunate to escape with just a yellow card for bringing down Alex Pritchard by his neck as the half wore on.

Andre Gray had two golden chances to level the game either side of half-time that would have led to nerves in the Riverside Stadium.

His tame header was easily gathered by the Boro goalkeeper before the break and the ball ran through his legs with the goal gaping.

Middlesbrough settled the tie soon after as Jelle Vossen, scorer of the opening goal at Griffin Park, went on a lung busting run that Harlee Dean and James Tarkowski failed to deal with. He laid the ball off to Kike to spark wild scenes at the Riverside.

The hosts had their third as, with Brentford playing two up front for what appeared to be the first time all season, they broke clear and Albert Adomah fired into the net as the defence failed to deal with the situation.

The final whistle marked the end of Brentford's season as Boro celebrated the chance of promotion to the Premier League.
