Rene Meulensteen has offered a lifeline to Fulham duo John Arne Riise and Adel Taarabt.

Defender Riise appeared to be on his way out of Craven Cottage after being deemed surplus to requirements by Martin Jol, but has started both game since his sacking.

Playmaker Taarabt has only had a bit-part role since his season-long loan switch from west London neighbours QPR, but Meulensteen has given the duo hope.

He said: "John Arne has a fantastic career behind him and is a fantastic person. He's very positive and because of the situation he was up for selection and was very important for us.

"We will take it game by game and when we reach a situation when we have to discuss it with the relevant people, we will do - his performances have been very good.

"Adel is a very talented player and so far I have worked with him well. I hope I can help him to fulfil his potential."
