Rene Meulensteen hopes Kostas Mitroglou can fire Fulham to Premier League survival.

The 25-year-old striker arrived at Craven Cottage from Olympiakos on deadline day in a deal worth around £11million.

Mitroglou topped the Greek Super League’s scoring charts with 14 goals prior to his move to Craven Cottage, netting 62 times in 148 games in total for the club.

And with Dimitar Berbatov having left SW6 to join Monaco, under-fire manager Meulensteen is pinning his hopes on his new arrival delivering the goods.

Mitroglou could make his debut at Manchester United on Sunday providing he shakes off an injury in time.

“One of the most important things we looked at is his scoring record,” said Meulensteen. “Over the last four or five seasons that has been very good.

“He has put away a few in the Champions League and he has got a good variety in his finishing, which we spoke a lot about with Giorgos Karagounis. Hopefully he will be a good help for us.

“He has trained but we have to be careful. He had an injury and coming from the Greek league, which is different to the Premier League, we need to make sure that the conditioning guys get him up to speed as best as we can.”
