Charlie MacDonald has cleared the decks for a move to Brentford.

The Southend striker, who the Bees had a £15,000 bid turned down for last week, has rejected higher offers from Morecambe and Cambridge but admits he'd be willing to talk to the Bees.

Brentford FC's initial bid was to test the water, and after it was doubled by the Us and Shrimps, boss Andy Scott was believed to have lost interest.

But it has since been re-ignited, and Scott has been given the green light by the club's board to go after the former Grays frontman.

Southend had accepted £30,000 bids from Cambridge and Morecambe, but MacDonald spurned both.

He told the Chronicle: "I have already proved myself in the Conference, so I didn't feel the need to drop into it again with Cambridge.

"Location was a factor with Morecambe, but the whole set-up there didn't appeal to me."

Another transfer which looked to have been dead in the water but could have new life breathed into it is Brentford's move for Peterborough defender Adam Newton.

Newton's wages were reported to be the stumbling block. But it appears Posh director of football Barry Fry and chairman Darren McAnthony putting their foot down poured cold water on the move over a payment due to Newton.
