Brendan Rodgers was furious with referee Anthony Taylor after the official decided not to award Liverpool a penalty against Chelsea.

The Blues were 2-1 winners at Anfield as Diego Costa netted his tenth of the season and Gary Cahill had cancelled out Emre Can’s deflected opener.

Steven Gerrard was calling for a late spot-kick when goalscorer Cahill appeared to block his shot with an arm but Taylor opted not to blow his whistle.

“It was a clear one,” a fuming Rodgers told BT Sport.

“We worked so hard in the game, we need those decisions.

“It was quite obvious, it hits his hand, it was a clear clear penalty and the referee has a clear view of it. The players gave everything and we deserved at least a point.”

Unclear: Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho with his tactics book

Mourinho claimed the incident was too far from the dugout from him to cast judgement on the decision but was full of praise for his team’s performance.

“It was a fantastic performance. The players as individuals all had a great performance and as team they were in control,” said Mourinho. "In the second half showed something new, which is to be 1-1 at Anfield and don’t accept the result as a good result and play to win.”

The victory sent Chelsea seven points clear of Southampton at the top of the Premier League.
