Barnet boss Martin Allen will be left ruing a 2-0 defeat at Leyton Orient after his side missed a series of first half chances.

The Bees started their first match back in the Football League with a plethora of efforts - none more noticeable than that of Michael Gash.

The big striker was perfectly placed for the cut-back after some brilliant work by John Akinde on the left wing, but despite being just twelve yards out contrived to miss the target.

Some magical footwork from Andy Yiadom nearly carved out a goal as he waltzed through the Orient defence, but he was only denied by a last ditch tackle.

And the Bees looked the more threatening in general over the first 45 minutes, although they were wasteful with their opportunities from range.

Regrets: Barnet manager Martin Allen

Ultimately, they were made to pay the price, as Orient came out for the second half with a more clinical game.

Unlike in the first half, the O’s were getting the ball out wide and delivering precise passes which hit their target - and the effect was devastating.

First, a powerful strike by Jay Simpson which keeper Graham Stock failed to palm away, before a dangerous ball into the box by Orient right-back Sean Clohessy eventually found its way into the net via Paul McCallum’s thumping effort form close range to seal the deal.

Allen’s men will take heart from a first half performance against a side he believes will not finish below the play-offs this season. And the signs are definitely positive for the Bees, though they will be anxious to make amends for their defensive lapses which cost them at the Matchroom Stadium.
