Leroy Fer reckons Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has proven he is ready to fill the void left by QPR sharpshooter Charlie Austin.

Fer made his first start of the season in yesterday’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Bolton Wanderers and even got himself on the scoresheet at Loftus Road,

His named was placed alongside Emmanuel-Thomas, who bagged a brace against the Trotters, as the Hoops came out on the right side of the seven-goal scoreline.

Austin has been ruled out for the next four weeks and Rangers fans had been fearing the worst after losing the marksman following a stunning start to his Championship campaign.

Fit-again: Leroy Fer

But Fer thinks the man they call JET is a ready-made replacement and will start to repay manager Chris Ramsey’s faith in him as the season progresses.

"It was a crazy game," Fer told the club’s official website. "two-nil down, three-two up, three-three - and then an unbelievable feeling at the end to win it.

“I think we showed great character. We didn't once drop our heads. Defensively we were poor again, but we've won the game with an incredible win - with an unbelievable goal."

"Everyone knows Charlie (Austin) is our number one striker, but JET came in and showed what he is about. I'm really happy for him and the team that we got all three points."

Goalscorer: Jay Emmanuel-Thomas

The forthcoming international break gives Austin an opportunity to work on his recovery and in some ways is a blessing in disguise for the Hoops.

Birmingham City provide the opposition when QPR resume their Championship adventure on October 17 and Fer says the mood in the camp is good ahead of the enforced lay off.

"It's great to go into the break with a win," he added. "We showed (against Bolton) that we can attack well, but there is a lot to improve on. We can't keep conceding the goals we're letting in.

"We have to crack on over the next fortnight, train hard, work on certain aspects of our game, and focus on the next game."
