NEW FULHAM owner Shahid Khan will back boss Martin Jol and leave him to get on with the job.

The self-made billionaire and owner of American football franchise the Jacksonville Jaguars, who bought out former Harrods owner Mohamed Al-Fayed on Friday, pledged in his first press conference to ‘give Jol the resources to do the job and then hold him responsible for how he uses them.’

The Pakistani-born business man, who made his fortune setting up car parts manufacturer Flex-N-Gate in Urbana Illinois, stopped short of promising to bank roll Fulham in the manner Roman Abramovich has done up the King’s Road at Chelsea.

However, he said enough to suggest the days of Fulham selling off prize playing assets like Mousa Dembele to the Premiership’s bigger clubs could be at an end.

And he made it clear the decisions on who to buy and sell would lie with Jol as he had no intention of picking the team as some chairman with football clubs as a toy have done in the past.

He said: “Decisions over the buying and selling of players will lie with Martin (Jol) as I’m no micro-manager.

“I’ll be applying some of the lessons I’ve learnt in America about going from one man in a garage to where we are today with 17,000 employees.

“How do you get to that level - By finding the best people, empowering them, giving them the resources, holding them accountable and not micro-managing.”

The self-confessed sports lover has since flown to the club’s pre-season tour in Costa Rica for his first face-to-face talks with Jol, having made clear he would be doing more listening than talking in a bid to understand the club’s football plans.

It seems he has also been listening to some of the Premier Leagues other American owners like Stan Kroenke (Arsenal) and the Glazers at Manchester United, in a bid to understand more about what he has bought into and to avoid making the mistakes some supremoes have made in the past.

He added: “Certainly you can learn from history and of course I’ve looked at it. Obviously you want to learn from other peoples mistakes and not repeat them.

“I’ve spoken to Stan Kroenke at length this week and to the Glazers as well.”
