MARTIN Jol has left the door open for John Arne Riise to stay at Fulham - but warned the defender he will begin the campaign on the bench.
The Norwegian was expected to leave Craven Cottage this month and recently claimed the club had granted him a free transfer.
Riise is likely to be among the substitutes for Saturday's trip to Sunderland, with Kieran Richardson set to start at left-back.
But Jol says he's happy for Riise to remain in SW6 if he's content with playing second fiddle to the Englishman.
He said: “Kieran Richardson did well and is very fit. He's the type of defender I like and has been playing most of the matches.
“John is a fantastic player and deserves to play. That's a conversation we had.
“If he's a second choice at this club I'm not sure he'll be a happy customer.
“If he was here I would be happy because if something happens to Kieran I've got a fantastic other left-back.”
