RAFA BENITEZ insists John Terry understands the new reality of no longer being an automatic starter in every single game.

The interim Chelsea boss says the Blues' skipper is no longer hampered by the knee injury he picked up against Liverpool before Christmas, but that he will continue to be held back in some matches.

Terry and Frank Lampard both played at Fulham in midweek, but neither played at Wembley last week in the FA cup semi-final against Manchester City.

“John Terry is fine now, he's training well” Benitez said. “But he said he can understand if I pick another player and he will be the first one supporting the team, so we agree that that is the right thing to do.

“If I pick him, it's because I think he's fine and if not it's because maybe another team-mate will be better for this game or the other game. I have to pick the team and it depends on each game.”
