John Egan would be honoured if Dean Smith gave him the Brentford captaincy on a permanent basis.

The Irishman has led the side when he has played this season, with Nico Yennaris wearing the armband on other occasions.

Smith has been vague as to who will wear the armband on a permanent basis but he will make that decision at Aston Villa on Saturday.

“When I've captained the team it's been an honour. The gaffer hasn't said anything but I'm sure him and the staff will decide that and we'll see what happens,” Egan said.

“I think you've got to be yourself. If someone is making you captain it's because of who you are.

“We've got a good changing room and good leaders and we can kick on and get some results soon and try and shoot up the table.

Brentford sit second bottom of the embryonic league table but their performances have suggested they are in a false position.

But, despite the poor results, Egan and co remain confident that their style of play will succeed.

He added: “We know that we haven't picked up as many points as we should have. There are games we should have won but we didn't.

“I don't feel we've got the results we've deserved. The performances have been there and we believe the tide will turn and we're looking forward to the next game.

“As a group, we fully believe in ourselves and each other and we've got a philsophy about ourselves and each other and we're working hard to make sure the tide turns and we get results.

“The belief is there. The lads are always at it. They've looked really sharp and the appetite is tehre to go and get the results we want.”
