Garry Haylock claimed his first victory since returning to Hayes & Yeading United as manager – and doesn’t care how he gets the next one.

It was a case of third time lucky for Haylock, who became United’s first manager following the merger between the two clubs in 2007, who secured the three points at the weekend after two goalless draws.

His opening two games back at the helm were workmanlike shut-outs of Gosport and Bishop’s Stortford but his side lacked a cutting edge that was finally discovered in a 3-0 victory over Concord Rangers on Saturday.

Haylock tinkered with his formation, employing Josh Scott up front on his own in a 4-5-1 formation which yielded a brace for the man who banged in goals for fun during his manager’s first spell as boss.

Adam Everitt, another of the manager’s old guard, has been pushed into midfield this term and it was his forage into the box that presented Scott with the task of slotting home a penalty for the opener.

Hayes & Yeading fans were relieved to see their side grab a second on the hour as Luke Williams’ delivery was met by an unmarked Elliot Benyon at the far post.

And he turned provider six minutes from time by floating in a wonderful left-footed cross for a lurking Scott to settle any late nerves and put the result beyond doubt.

United have shown good progress in the first few weeks since Tristan Lewis stepped down from the top job but are not looking to play a specific style.

Brian Clough and other famous managers to have been immortalised in statues in pictures:

Haylock only wants one constant – a steady stream of points – and looks back to the great Brian Clough for inspiration when setting up his teams each weekend.

He said: “I believe there’s only one style of football that matters and that’s winning football.

“We don’t want to concede goals and we want to score plenty at the other end. One thing I’ve learnt is that as a manager you have to be pragmatic.

“When I started at Hayes & Yeading last time we couldn’t win a game for the first eight so I changed the style and we went on and won promotion. I’d like to think we’ll play football that wins games.

“Nigel Clough said his dad only gave him one piece of advice and that was that the fans won’t complain if you get them three points.”

United have already equalled the same clean sheet tally of seven blanks as last season despite the season still being in its infancy.

They’ll have to wait for the chance to make that eight as they take a break from action due to Eastbourne’s involvement in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Meanwhile, in the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central, Northwood were left disappointed as Michael Murray’s injury-time consolation couldn’t salvage anything from their 2-1 loss to Bedford.

Tony Choules’ Uxbridge were beaten 2-1 at Aylesbury while AFC Hayes lost by the same scoreline as their two near neighbours in their Combined Counties Premier loss to Badshot Lea.
