Brentford lead the way in the Championship when it comes to the amount of minutes played by players aged 21-23.

The Bees have the second youngest squad in the division, after Barnsley, and Twitter user @GeorgeBall95 has crunched the numbers to determine how many minutes players of a certain age have played this season for their current clubs.

Brentford's approach is wildly different from league leaders Brighton, who have tended to rely on veterans and they are now on the cusp of promotion to the Premier League, with young players getting very little game time.

The Bees' approach is more akin to second placed Newcastle and the Magpies have tended to rely on young players as well as those in their prime, with veterans getting precious little game time on Tyneside.

Reading are also similar but they have more veterans that they lean on than most other clubs.

And the Bees comfortably come out on top in the 21-23 range, with nearly 14,000 minutes distributed across the side.

That is roughly 3,000 more than second place Reading and a bit further more of third placed Newcastle United.

Sheffield Wednesday, Brighton and Birmingham are the bottom three when it comes to minutes played in this category.

Brentford are seventh in terms of minutes played by players under the age of 21 and, this time, it is Barnsley out in front with around 5,000 minutes.

The Tykes' total is approximately double that of the Bees, while Nottingham Forest, Birmingham, Bristol City, Huddersfield and Ipswich are all ahead of the west Londoners.

At the bottom of the table Cardiff, Newcastle and Preston with a grand total of no minutes played. Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday fare little better. Reading, Brighton and Burton all have handed out roughly 400 minutes to players under 21.

Brentford are 19th in the table when it comes to players aged 24-30, which is roughly the peak age for footballers.

Bees players of that age have played roughly 20,000 minutes, which is 12,000 behind Fulham, who lead in this category. Huddersfield and Newcastle follow the Whites.

Struggling Wigan have the least minutes in this category and are followed by Ipswich and already relegated Rotherham.

Brentford are at the bottom of the pile when it comes to minutes played by players over 31. The Bees only have Alan McCormack, 33, in that bracket at the club and he has played 226 minutes this season. Sam Saunders played 231 minutes before his departure to Wycombe.

Newcastle and Fulham are second and third in terms of the fewest minutes handed out to players over 31.

However, league leaders Brighton are comfortably clear in front, with nearly 14,000 minutes played by veterans.
