It wasn't pretty - but this vital win did Barnet a power of good.

Mauro Vilhete and John Akinde struck second half goals to lift Barnet out of the League Two relegation zone in a turgid affair.

Portuguese midfielder Vilhete gave the Bees the lead after a counter-attack midway through the second half before Akinde’s ninth of the season settled the points in stoppage-time.

However, the hosts will point to Adebayo’s Akinfenwa’s header in the first half that was ruled out as the turning point in an awful game.

Wycombe began brightly with Paris Cowan-Hall heading narrowly wide at the far post inside five minutes, while another cross from Michael Harriman forced Bees skipper Michael Nelson to head over his own bar to safety.

Goal! Mauro Vilhete celebrates

Then came the drama as the lively Cowan-Hall produced a perfect cross from the right for the head of Akinfenwa, who duly powered a header beyond recalled visiting keeper Josh Vickers.

However, referee Graham Horwood had already blown for a foul on Cowan-Hall.

The disallowed effort killed Wycombe momentum, while in first-half stoppage time it was Barnet’s turn to feel hard done as appeals for a penalty were waved away when leading scorer Akinde went down.

Akinde was in the thick of it again immediately after the break, but a superb challenge by Harriman blocked his first shot at goal and a follow-up effort sailed high over the bar.

Anthony Stewart warmed the hands of Vickers with a shot at the other end, but it was the visitors who grabbed the lead on 65 minutes.

Akinde held the ball up well and released Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro down the left. He stepped inside the challenge of Harriman and centred for the unmarked Vilhete to slip the ball under Jamal Blackman.

Chairboys’ boss Gareth Ainsworth threw on Myles Weston and Scott Kashket in response to the setback.

Near thing: Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro

But they fashioned little, and Akpa-Akpro almost bagged a second when his effort from inside his own half almost embarrassed Blackman before drifting wide three minutes from time.

Weston, already booked for an earlier foul, was then sent off in the last minute for a second yellow after a foul on Vilhete.

And Akinde rounded things off when with the hosts pushing up as he shrugged off Aaron Pierre to sprint clear and round Blackman in added time.
