Bedfont Green stormed to the top of the Combined Counties Premier - their highest-ever league position - with a 5-0 demolition of Chertsey Town on Tuesday night, writes Tim Street.

The game was the perfect response to Green's surprise 6-0 mauling at the hands of promotion rivals Camberley Town on Saturday.

Dennis Bainborough's men had no such problems against pre-season title favourites Chertsey, who featured former Green striker Aaron McLeish.

McLeish, who left Green for Blue Square South side Thurrock earlier this season, hardly got a sniff all night for Chertsey.

Instead, it was Green's attack which shone from the moment Carl McClusky gave them the lead with an overhead kick on 15 minutes.

Tom McCarthy doubled their lead 10 minutes later after the brilliant Chris Henry beat four Chertsey men, and Henry was again involved for the third.

He and Russell Miner linked up superbly to set up Gavin Hart for a tap-in just before the break.

Miner got the goal he deserved with 13 minutes left after latching onto a brilliant through-ball from McCarthy, and Jon-Barrie Bates rounded off the rout with three minutes remaining direct from a free-kick.

Proud chairman Doug White said: "I'd be happy just staying up for two years until we expect our new ground at Bedfont Trading Estate to be ready, but Dennis reckons he can get us into the Ryman League.

"We've only been in senior football a few seasons, but other teams are starting to sit up and take notice of us now.

"Camberley watched us last week, then went out and bought three new players before beating us on Saturday."

Green are without a game on Saturday, but make the short trip to Egham on Tuesday night for another league game.
