Hayes & Yeading manager Phil Babb has suggested postponed games could actually improve the fitness levels of his squad.

You might think that a lack of match action could see the players take their eye off the ball and allow themselves to take it easy.

But Babb, in his first management job with United, acts quickly when he learns a game has been called off.

Tonight’s (Tuesday’s) trip to Gosport Town suffered the same fate as Saturday’s clash with Dorchester as the pouring rain put paid to any chance of some Skrill South action.

Earlier this week, Babb was already plotting a local behind-closed-doors game for his boys if mother nature continued to show her teeth and that is expected to take place this evening.

And while these fixtures may lack the intensity of a battle for points, the United boss says he will turn up the heat on the training field to keep his troops in check.

“Once you know the game’s off you just drive up the intensity of the training sessions,” Babb said.

“It gives you a chance to work even harder on the fitness levels if anything. It’s all about games though and after a couple of defeats we wanted to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible.

“It’s disappointing that the weather has disrupted everything. All you can do is make sure the conditioning is right and make sure the lads are focussed.”

Meanwhile, Bideford’s Ben Gerring is believed to be the latest in a long line of new recruits to Hayes & Yeading.

He follows Aiden Hawtin (on loan from Oxford), Derek Tieku (on loan from Crystal Palace), Myles Hippolyte and Jack Pattison in signing up to the Babb revolution.
