Phil Babb believes his winning mentality is the reason Hayes & Yeading are the highest-ranked team in England yet to draw a game this season.

United have gone 17 Skrill South matches without drawing, a record that no other team in the country’s top-six divisions can match.

They have won nine and lost eight of their league fixtures this term, with their latest triumph coming on Saturday as they ended a four-game losing streak.

United gained revenge for their early FA Cup exit to Tonbridge Angels by beating the Kent club 3-0 at Kingfield.

The hosts controlled much of the early play without creating any real clear-cut chances, until a rash tackle in the area by Phil Appiah gifted the home side a penalty.

Jake Reid converted the kick in expert fashion past Clark Masters in the Angels’ goal to give his team the lead after 17 minutes of play.

As half time approached, United claimed that all-important second goal.

And what a goal it was. A ball into the Angels’ box was poorly cleared only for Jack Mills to run on to it and smash home from 25 yards out.

United kept up the intensity right until the final whistle and were rewarded for their sustained effort when the energetic Geoff Mitchell, who had been influential all afternoon, was played through on goal by Luke Williams and added a deserved third to complete the job.

Babb was pleased with another three points and insisted going into games with the sole purpose of avoiding defeat never enters his thinking.

“I don’t think any manager goes into a match looking for a draw,” he said. “That’s not the sort of philosophy that I buy into.

“I want to go and win every game and we certainly could have won more games. It’s quite a phenomenon [to have gone 17 games without drawing] to be fair. I certainly can’t put my finger on it and the boys can’t either.

“There have been sloppy mistakes when we have been in winning positions or when we’ve been drawing towards the latter end of the game and then there is a mistake which ultimately costs us a loss.”

United will be hoping they can pick up another three points and avoid being held to their first stalemate of the campaign when they travel to Chelmsford City on Saturday.

Meanwhile, defender Anthony Furlonge has had his loan spell cut short at Kingfield and returned to parent club Stevenage.

Huw Johnson, who was tracked by Babb in the summer, has joined United after being released by Skrill South rivals Staines Town.
