Brentford defender Harlee Dean is desperate to erase memories of his play-off pain.

The 23-year-old was part of the Bees side that suffered Wembley heartbreak in the League One final two years ago against Yeovil.

Brentford won automatic promotion to the Championship last term and are now dreaming of the Premier League after a dramatic final day.

The Bees secured their spot in the end-of-season shoot-out after brushing Wigan aside as play-off rivals Ipswich and Derby both slipped up.

And Dean is hoping for a chance to put their Wembley woes behind them by seeing off Middlesbrough in the two-legged semi-final.

He said: “It was heartbreaking losing at Wembley. We’ve got that experience under our belts and I think it will only hold us in good stead this time.

“I may have scored but we still lost, so that goal means nothing. It was only a consolation in the end.

“We don’t want to go through those emotions again, but we’ll use that as extra motivation this time because nothing beats winning promotion.

“No one expected us to be here – we’ve already overachieved. We believe in ourselves and think we can get to the Premier League.

“People are worried about playing us, but we just have to make sure we do our job. We’re going to give it our all.”

Alex Pritchard’s first-half free-kick put Brentford ahead before Jota’s goal after the break settled the nerves around Griffin Park.

Andre Gray’s 17th of the season wrapped up victory, while James Tarkowski saw a late penalty saved by Latics keeper Lee Nicholls.

Wigan chief Gary Caldwell has targeted promotion back to the Championship straight away but defender James Perch has warned the Latics face a fight to get out of League One.

He said: “When a team goes down the aim is to go straight back up. I’ve played in League One and it’s not plain sailing –you can’t turn up and expect to win two or three nil.

“It’s a tough league to get out of, as the likes of Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City have seen in the past.

“I played there for three years for Forest and never got promoted. Teams raise their games against you and sit back. It’s not going to be easy.”
