Harlee Dean is 'proud' after being named Brentford captain and will look to lead by example on and off the pitch.

Dean Smith made the Bees defender his skipper at the start of the season and told him that he had to perform to keep the armband and a place in the side.

The former Southampton man has done that so far and was noticeably geeing up his team-mates during the 1-0 defeat at Rotherham.

And Dean was also looking to push forward more than he has done in recent seasons at Brentford in order to try and make something happen.

He said: “I'm very proud (to be captain). I always thought I could be a captain and I lead by example on and off the pitch.

“I've always been vocal so being a captain doesn't make a difference to that. I tried to affect the game and get the boys going.

“It's difficult as a centre half but I found myself in attacking areas quite a lot. I was trying to drive the team forward and make something happen.”
