Ashford United 1-2 Hanwell Town - FA Vase 4th round

It was the cup clash that looked like it might never happen.

But finally, after six postponements, four of them in west London, three in Kent, the match took place at the seventh time of asking.

After falling behind 10 minutes into the second half to a goal from Ashford's Michael Smisson, Dominic Rhone put away a penalty to draw Hanwell level in what proved the turning point of the game.

Home defender Luke Cuthbert was sent off for a foul on Ricky Pither to give away the spot kick and Hanwell's tails were up.

And it was no surprise when goal machine Bill Healey bagged the winner two minutes from time, after latching onto a weak punched clearance following a free-kick.

Frustrated Ashford ended the match with nine men when they had defender Jordan Miller sent off for a second yellow after a push on Tom Duffy.

Hanwell do not have much time to celebrate Thursday night's win. It's straight on to Amptill Town tomorrow (Saturday) for a fifth round tie - with a quarter-final the reward for the winners.

Boss Ray Duffy said: "We only heard the game was on at 1.30pm and didn't get to Ashford until after 7pm, so our warm-up wasn't the best and we were very rusty.

"But at the same time we managed to tough it out on a heavy pitch and we're just so pleased to be through to the next round."

Hanwell were making an 11th hour bid to give themselves an extra day to recover, by appealing for the Amptill game to be put back to Sunday.

But the club are braced for another demanding game less than 48 hours after their heroics at Ashford.
