Old Meadonians 1-0 West Wickham 0 (aet)

Old Meadonians are through to the final of the Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup for the fifth time, giving themselves the opportunity of extending to a full house their record of having won this prestigious amateur cup.

Meads started brightly enough getting the ball into the Wickham area in the first five minutes and going one up in the chances stakes when Jones could only toe poke an attempt from ten yards which went straight to the keeper.

Gary Robinson wasn’t called into action until ten minutes into the second half when he lost a long range lob in the sun and the rebound off the bar was put over. The remainder of the second half was unfruitful but it was notable that Meads were gradually gaining the upper hand to give them greater access to their opponents’ area.

In extra time Meads gradually increased their hold on the game and almost immediately Ali McCombe had a header from a corner cleared off the line but sub Adam Goode, on at right back to push John Shay into mid-field, got the winning goal four minutes into the period.

Jack Costello’s deep corner from the left found Goode soaring to crash a header into the roof of the net.

From then on Meads looked the only side likely to score another. John Shay shaded Ali McCombe for the man of the match award.

Heathrow Seniors 4-1 Clapham

Heathrow may have feared the elements working against them this weekend as they welcomed the Old Xaverians, but getting the better of both mother nature and their opponents left them the happier side this weekend.

Andy Sleg may have squandered an early chance to put his side ahead, but he was quickly given a reprieve when, on 17 minutes, he latched on to a low drive from a free running Ashley Bertram to slot past the oncoming keeper.

As the game opened up, Clapham tried to force their way back in, but on the stroke of half-time Paul Sleg latched onto another fine cross from Bertram to double the home side’s advantage.

Heathrow keeper Joe Marshall was made to be at his best, producing a string of fine saves, but could do little to stop Clapham getting off the mark with just over 10 minutes remaining.

But with Xaverians pushing hard for an equaliser, Ed Karanja was able to break away for Heathrow to cut inside and restore the side’s two-goal advantage.

And the afternoon was rounded off with a fine solo goal from Kelvin Karanja, who took advantage of more lapse defending to make the score 4-1.

BAA Heathrow 1-4 FC Laleham

BAA Heathrow (Sunday) FC Vets debut season appears to be coming to a poor finish after an initial good start to 2015.

They recently lost 4-1 to FC Laleham in the league meaning they have now lost four of their last five games. The recent defeat was a familiar story for the team as they held the advantage of a single goal until the 65th minute and then conceded three goals in five minutes.

BAA started the game brightly and created chances with Danny Ritchie heading over and Chris Geal and Robbie Galway both shooting from range. BAA thought they had taken the lead when a Laleham defender headed into his own net but it was rules out by the referee for a push.

However BAA’s pressure paid off when Richard Gafan’s corner was met with a powerful header by Danny Ritchie. Laleham had chances of their own but were frustrated by BAA’s player manager Jason Ravenhill who made a series of saves in goal as BAA went in at half time 1-0 up.

The second half proved to be much more difficult for BAA as Laleham put BAA under pressure for long periods and finally broke the deadlock after BAA were caught napping at the back and looking for an offside flag.

BAA then crumbled under pressure as a further two goals were scored, Danny Ritchie had another chance but his one on one effort was well saved by the Laleham goalkeeper and the result was put beyond doubt with a fourth goal on the counter attack.
