AFC Wimbledon cannot simply rely on their scrooge-like defence to take them to their dream date at Wembley, according to striker Lyle Taylor.

The Wombles’ 1-0 win in Saturday’s League Two play-off semi-final first leg means a goalless draw in tonight’s return game will book Neal Ardley’s men a date with Plymouth at Wembley.

Wimbledon have become the masters of the shut-out in recent weeks, having stopped the opposition scoring in six of their last seven matches.

But in a delicately balanced tie 21-goal Taylor believes he and his fellow strikers must do their part to secure safe passage.

“Wembley is 90 minutes away,” he said. “Wembley is a clean sheet away. Let’s face it it’s as simple as that, but football isn’t quite that easy, so we have got to go and work our nuts off again and try and score some more goals.”

Taylor scored twice in the league meeting between the two sides at Stanley’s Wham Stadium back in October, a game Dons won 4-3.

The reverse fixture ended goalless and it needed Tom Beere’s stoppage-time winner to separate the teams on Saturday, confirming what most suspected there is little to choose between them.

Taylor agrees his side’s advantage is precious, but slim.

“It is a slender advantage, but they’ve seen what we’ve got and we’ve seen what they’ve got and we will see what happens Wednesday now,” he added.

“It can’t help them (not having beaten AFC Wimbledon in three attempts), but you can’t look at it that way and rest on your laurels. We need to go and work hard again and see where we go.”
