BREDE Hangeland admits he lacks ambition – but he cites it as a major reason Fulham are about to embark on a glorious 12th season in the Premier League.

The modest club skipper is excited as everyone else at the arrival of new owner Shahid Khan toting £1.6 billion behind him.

But whether the successful businessman does or does not shell out expansively on the team, practical Hangeland has blinkers on mid-table safety starting with points from Saturday's opener at Sunderland.

“My concern every year is to get 40 points as early as possible,” he said.

“It might be a lack of ambition to say it, but I’m happy just to stay in the league because so many teams are investing constantly.

“We’re punching above our weight, and having been here so long I know our strength relative to other clubs, and we need to stay modest.

“There was a definite buzz around the club when the new owner came in, and you see teams strengthening around us.

“We would definitely welcome new signings, although it’s definitely not my decision to make.”

However, the giant Norwegian does nurture a hope he will eventually end his playing days by the riverside as he starts his sixth season with the Whites.

“I can see myself staying here for the rest of my career – but I hope I don’t have to make that decision just yet,” he added.

“I’ve loved my time here and I’ve had chances to leave, but I’ve found no reason to do it.”

However, the 32-year-old has ruled out running for the chairmanship of the PFA next month, despite reports suggesting he is about to become the first foreigner to front the players union.

Hangeland said: “My focus is on Fulham. I feel I have a responsibility and a lot of work to do here and certainly enough to fill my time.”
