Matt Smith says he is the Fulham 'battering ram' - and the team will be all the better for having him as an alternative to the silky football favoured by the club.

The reborn 6ft 6ins striker has proved more than his worth so far in contrast to a wretched injury-hit 2015-16 when frozen out by Ross McCormack and Moussa Dembele's 40 goals that saved Whites from relegation.

However, his manager said the ex-Leeds forward's place in the team depends on goals, and Smith has responded with the winner against both Newcastle and Preston - and hit the post with a powerful header in the 1-1 draw with Leeds.

Smith says pre-season set the tone for three wins and a draw.

“We've had a well organised pre-season in the sense that we've worked a lot on team shape," he said.

“We are starting to look very much like a team now. We are very organised and everyone is very aware of their responsibilities.

“I think that is showing.”

“I am enjoying it. I've got plenty of terrific footballers in front of me and I'm the sort of battering ram looking to get on the end of things.

Sunset for Newcastle: Matt Smith scores

“It is nice to have a mix because it can be a bit all too predictable if everyone is in the same mould so to speak. I like to think I can provide something different to the team and so far it has worked well.”

Leeds levelled in the last 90 seconds much to the ire of head coach Slavisa Jokanovic, but Smith believes the moral victory went to the team in red.

Message: Smith welcomes Ryan Sessegnon to the team

“We played some good football and I thought we were the better team," he added.

“It could have been different had we stuck away our chances because we hit the post twice and were in a couple of good positions as well.

“Overall I think we have got to be pleased with our performance and take heart from it. There is plenty to build on going into Cardiff on Saturday.”
