We're fast approaching the end of the year, something that coincides with the halfway point for the Championship, and it's been a mixed year as far as Fulham are concerned.

The side ended the 2016/17 season as one of the best teams in the Championship, but lost the Play-off semi final to Reading, and despite being tipped to be right up at the top in this campaign, things haven't really gone as planned.

But now that we're at the end of the calendar year, we've taken a look back at the year that was and have decided who the best player was and where the highlights of the year can be found.

Here's our verdicts:

Best player

There's only one player that can win this, and that is the Fulham captain, Tom Cairney.

In the first part of the year, Cairney was instrumental in Slavisa Jokanovic's team and their charge to the Play-offs in April, and it was clear that when the 26-year-old played well, Fulham played well.

An injury in pre-season means he hasn't been at the top of his game just yet in the latter part of 2017 - but that performance against Ipswich Town in August was the Cairney we all know, and as time goes on the creative midfielder will find only get back to that level of performance.

Honourable Mentions: An honourable mention must go to Kevin McDonald, who has been consistent as the year has gone and is also one of the most instrumental players in the Fulham side.

Best goal

This is a tough category, fans and press alike were treated to so many goals at the end of last season that we're spoilt for choice in this category.

For me, the Cairney goal against Leeds stands out as a highlight, not just because of the quality of strike but because of what it meant to players, management and fans.

It was a lovely hit from the captain, curling it into the top corner and the celebrations afterwards in the Hammersmith End are one that will live long in the memory, add to it that it was a last minute equaliser against a Play-off rival and it makes it just that bit sweeter.

Honourable mentions: There really are so many that could win this category, Ryan Sessegnon's goals at Newcastle, Cairney's goal at Newcastle, the goals at Huddersfield and Sessegnon's wonderful strike at Sheffield United this year - the ball from Oliver Norwood and the youngster's ability to slot it across goal into the far side was brilliant.

Best moment

I think the best moment of the year was at the final whistle of the Newcastle game at St James' Park, after Fulham had absolutely tore Rafa Bentiez' side to shreds.

Sessegnon's two goals, Cairney's strike and the manner of which Fulham controlled that game was something that summed up the second part of the season and the charge to the play-offs.

Jokanovic's side were playing the beautiful game and it was a pleasure to witness a side in full flight that day.

Honourable mentions: The win at Huddersfield gets an honourable mention here, while the draw with Leeds at home does too. Watching that 5-4 victory over Sheffield United was also one of the best moments of the year - I've never seen a game like that and I doubt I ever will again.
