Rene Meulensteen is hopeful Kostas Mitroglou will be fit enough to feature in Fulham's trip to Manchester United on Sunday.

The Greek striker, who arrived on a four-and-half-year deal for £11million from Olympiakos on deadline day, has been struggling with a knee injury.

Mitroglou was ineligible for the defeats against Southampton and Sheffield United but Meulensteen hopes he can play some part at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, fellow new signing John Heitinga is in line to make his debut, while Lewis Holtby is expected to return to the side after sitting out the FA Cup loss to the Blades.

Sascha Riether and Kieran Richardson are also in contention after shaking off knocks, while Maarten Stekelenburg and Steve Sidwell should return to the starting XI.

Boss Rene Meulensteen, who has been given support by owner Shahid Khan this week, said: "With Kostas we're trying to bring him up to speed coming from Greece and we’ll see how he goes in training.

"He’s improving all the time. How far he is, I couldn’t really point out to you.

“Johnny is fully fit, he’s trained very, very well. Everybody [else] is fit and well to go. As we know we had a lot of games over the last period constantly – that means that you have to manage the recovery periods, but everybody is raring to go.”
