Slavisa Jokanovic watched his side beat Crystal Palace on Saturday - and admitted Fulham will have to up the gears if they are to get past Newcastle on Friday night.

It's one thing to win a pre-season canter, quite another to trump the side tipped for an immediate return to the top flight, says the head coach.

In fact, Jokanovic says the side is fighting fit, but he's not so sure about the challenge the Championship presents.

“This is only pre-season,” he said. “The really important games are going to start next Friday night and will finish nine months after.

“We will forget our victory today in a pre-season game very fast. Probably in six days nobody will remember this preparation game.

“I believe we are ready for the first game but we are not ready for the competition. I expect we’re still going to show more ambition in these days that are in front of us.”

Jokanovic has overseen the arrival of six new players and the permanent signing of defender Michael Madl, but insists he still needs another five players after releasing or selling 21, including fringe players.
