Rene Meulensteen reckons Fulham's experienced heads will be vital if the Cottagers are to climb away from the drop zone.

Scott Parker, Steve Sidwell and Giorgios Karagounis all started in midfield for Sunday's win against Aston Villa - their first victory in eight matches.

The trio have a combined age of almost 100, but new boss Meulensteen says their know-how will be important over the coming months.

He said: "What you get in exchange for age is experience. These players are well-trained: it's our job in the staff to make sure they have the energy to play at this level.

"And it's important that you use them in the right jobs that are tight for the team and that's what I've done."

Sidwell scored the opener on his return to the starting XI, while stand-in skipper Parker bagged the man of the match award.

But Meulensteen has hailed the display of veteran Greek Karagounis.

He added: "Well on top of that performance, he's a fantastic character, he's an inspiring person and that transfers onto other players and to the fans."
