Fulham missed the chance to climb into the play-off places last night as they drew 2-2 with Blackburn in what was anything but a classic encounter at Craven Cottage.

Sone Aluko had given Slavisa Jokanovic's side the lead on the stroke of half time after the hosts finally found space between the midfield and back four, but they were pegged back by Craig Conway's penalty.

But Fulham kept plugging away and Gohi Cyriac got his first goal for the club since signing on transfer deadline day to restore the Cottagers lead.

That was short lived however, when substitute Lucas Joao popped up at the back post in the final seconds of added time to give the away side an equaliser and a share of the points.

There was a lot to talk about after the game, here's what our Fulham reporter learned.

Blackburn did a job on Tom Cairney

You can't expect Fulham's talisman to perform at the levels he's been doing so every week, but Tony Mowbray came up with a plan to shackle Cairney last night and his players executed it near-perfectly.

Cairney likes to find the space between the opposition's midfield and back four where he can thread through his forwards or have an effort himself, but last night Blackburn crowded that space out.

Every time he got the ball in his favoured position, he was crowded out by three Blackburn players at a ferocious pace.

The one time he managed to find that space was when he broke on the counter at the end of the first half, where he found Stefan Johansen who in turn set up Aluko for his goal.

It was clever from Mowbray and his players executed the plan perfectly.

Defensive frailties cost Fulham again

Once Fulham went 2-1 up, the tie should've been done and dusted.

But as Jokanovic said in his post-match press conference, the side lacked the experience to kill the game off and allowed Blackburn to continue to bombard the Fulham box with crosses.

As we have seen time and time again this season, Fulham have defensive concerns and they reared their heads again last night when the cross wasn't shut down and Joao popped up at the back post unmarked to bundle home.

If Fulham want to get into those play-off places they have to kill ties off, especially at home against teams that are languishing in the lower reaches of the Championship.

Fulham couldn't handle Lucas Joao

As substitutes go, this was a good one from Blackburn.

Danny Graham started the game for the away side but he was anonymous throughout the first half as Blackburn failed to find the lone man up front.

Mowbray sent in Joao during the second half and he was a much bigger threat, and Tomas Kalas and Tim Ream struggled to deal with his physicality.

After causing so many problems, it was always going to be Joao to score.

Fulham played some lovely stuff with no real end product

We all know there's an argument to be made for Fulham playing the best football in division, and that's all well and good.

Last night's performance was easy on the eye but there was never any real end product, the side looked to be missing that creative spark to open up Blackburn's defence.

Like I mentioned previously, the one time they found it they opened up the away side and Aluko stuck the ball in the back of the net.

Credit though to Blackburn, who came to Craven Cottage to deny Fulham openings and that is exactly what happened.
