Former QPR manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is among the contenders competing for the vacant Northampton Town manager position, according to HITC Sports.

The Cobblers parted company with manager Justin Edinburgh after a disappointing start to the season in League One, which included a 1-0 defeat to the Hoops in the Carabao Cup first round.

Hasselbaink and Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Hurst are thought to be the front-runners for the vacant role, although the former Chelsea and Middlesbrough striker is thought to be the preferred option due to being a free agent.

The Dutchman, who guided Burton Albion to the League Two title in 2014/15, has been out of work since being sacked by QPR last November and he is understood to be keen to get back into management.

Edinburgh's assistant David Kerslake has been put in caretaker charge at Sixfields for the time being until a new manager is named.
