Goalkeepers in west London can benefit from weekly specialist training through GK Icon, hosted at Bedfont Sports Club starting on Wednesday.

GK Icon is the brainchild of former Brentford and Watford stopper Richard Lee and the franchise will be run by former Bees keeper Alan Julian.

And the company, which has franchises around the world including America and Australia, is returning to its roots in London.

Lee said: “I'm coming home. It's been great. Since I've retired I've been able to give the goalkeeping business a lot more attention and it's grown in quite a big way.

“As well as Alan Julian, we've brought on franchisees such as Brian Jensen and Dean Thornton, Swindon's goalkeeper coach.

“We were delighted when Alan joined our merry band. We're best up to 40 franchises across the world, including America and Australia.”

Lee started GK Icon during his playing days at Watford and has teamed up with Challenger Sports, which allows him to focus on working with the coaches and have also affiliated with Women's World Cup winning coach Tony DiCicco.

He added: “It's changed quite a lot since we started. We've teamed up with Challenger Sports.

“They're huge in America and have helped create the infrastructure here and my main role is to work with the coaches themselves and to have my input with the coaches.

“I'm really excited to open in Feltham; so close to Brentford it's cool with Alan Julian running it. We're expecting it to be one of our most successful centres.”

For Julian, who came through the ranks at Brentford, it is a chance to start his coaching career and he wants to specialise in goalkeeping.

He explained: “I've been playing full-time football for 16, 17 years since I left school and then I've gone part time the last few years.

“It's opened up my eyes to a few things. My career is slowly winding down. It's now time to think about what to do next.

“Football has been the only thing in my life so I wanted to stay involved in any way I could. Being a manager doesn't appeal to me.

“I want to stick to goalkeeping and goalkeeper coaching is perfect. Nothing can beat playing but to pass something back will be a great thing to do. I got in contact with Richard and Scott and here I am.”
